Add Line Numbers: what to know
Add Line Numbers puts a number in front of every line of your text. Choose the number to start from, the separator (a period, parenthesis, colon or tab) and whether to pad numbers with zeros so they line up (01, 02 ... 10).
Turn on 'Skip empty lines' to leave blank lines unnumbered, so numbering continues across paragraph gaps without counting them.
The result is plain text, ready to paste into a document, email, forum post or spreadsheet. With the tab separator, numbers and text land in separate spreadsheet columns.
Popular uses
- Numbering steps, questions and checklist items
- Adding line numbers to code snippets for review
- Referencing lines in legal or academic text
- Preparing numbered lists for plain-text email
Tips for the best result
- Use zero padding when numbers will be sorted as text later.
- Use a start number to continue numbering from a previous page.
- Remove numbering later with Find and Replace in regex mode: find ^\d+\. and replace with nothing.
