Sentence Counter: what to know
The sentence counter counts how many sentences your text has and the average number of words per sentence, so you can see at a glance whether your writing is easy to follow.
A sentence ends with a period, a question mark, an exclamation mark or an ellipsis that's followed by a space or the end of the text. Periods inside decimals (3.14), after common abbreviations (Dr., Mr., e.g., i.e.) and after initials (J. K. Rowling) don't end a sentence. A blank line also ends one, so headings and list items without a final period are still counted.
The rules are simple and predictable rather than perfect. An abbreviation at the very end of a sentence, or a title without punctuation run straight into the next line, can shift the count by one.
Popular uses
- Checking readability: long average sentences are harder to read
- Meeting sentence-count requirements in school assignments
- Balancing short and long sentences in marketing copy
- Comparing the rhythm of two drafts
Tips for the best result
- If your average is high, look for sentences joined with 'and' or 'which' that could be split.
- Bullet lists without periods count one sentence per paragraph block, so add periods if each item should count.
- Use the word counter for the full set of figures, including reading time.
