Text Compare: what to know

Text Compare shows the differences between two versions of a text. Paste the original on the left and the changed version on the right, and the comparison updates as you edit. Removed text is highlighted in red and added text in green, side by side or in one inline view.

Lines are compared with the Myers diff algorithm, the method behind tools such as git diff, which finds a smallest set of line changes. Changed lines are then compared word by word, so a single edited word is highlighted instead of the whole line. 'Ignore case' and 'Ignore whitespace' hide changes you don't care about.

Both texts stay on your device. For very large inputs the comparison may take a moment, and when two texts are almost entirely different the remainder is shown as replaced rather than searched in detail, so your browser stays responsive.

Popular uses

  • Checking edits between two drafts of an essay or contract
  • Comparing configuration files or code snippets
  • Finding what changed in a policy or terms page
  • Proofreading a translation update against the old version

Tips for the best result

  • Turn on 'Ignore whitespace' when one version was reformatted.
  • Turn on 'Hide unchanged lines' to focus on the edits in long documents.
  • Download the result as a unified diff (+ and - lines) to share it.

Frequently asked questions

Lines are compared with the Myers diff algorithm, the same approach used by version control tools such as git. Changed lines are then compared word by word, so the exact edit is highlighted.

There's no fixed limit, but very large texts take longer because everything runs on your device. When two texts are extremely different, the remaining part is shown as replaced rather than searched in detail.
