Every figure updates as you type. Pick a speed or option if you need one.

  3. 3

    Use the numbers

All figures sit next to your text. Edit and they update.

Paragraph Counter: what to know

The paragraph counter tells you how many paragraphs your text has, alongside the number of lines, words and sentences.

By default every non-empty line counts as a paragraph. That matches text copied from word processors, Google Docs and most web pages, where each paragraph is one long line. Text copied from a PDF or a plain-text email is often hard-wrapped, with a line break at the end of every printed line; switch to 'Blank lines only' and only empty lines will separate paragraphs.

Blank lines and lines containing only spaces are never counted, so extra spacing between paragraphs doesn't change the result.

Popular uses

  • Checking an essay has the required number of paragraphs
  • Planning article structure and section length
  • Counting entries in a list pasted one per line
  • Checking text copied from a PDF before reformatting it

Tips for the best result

  • If the count seems too high, your text probably has hard line breaks: use 'Blank lines only', or join them with Remove Line Breaks.
  • On screens, short paragraphs of a few sentences are easier to read than long blocks.
  • The line count includes empty lines; the paragraph count never does.
