Capitalize Sentences: what to know

Capitalize Sentences puts a capital letter at the start of every sentence, which fixes text from chat apps, transcripts and notes typed without capitals.

By default it changes only those first letters, so names, acronyms and anything else you capitalized stay as they are. Turn on 'Lowercase the rest' to fix text typed in capitals as well: everything is lowercased first, then sentence starts and the pronoun 'I' (including I'm, I've, I'll and I'd) are capitalized.

A sentence starts after a period, question mark, exclamation mark or ellipsis followed by a space, and after a blank line. Periods in abbreviations such as Dr. and e.g., initials and decimals don't start a new sentence. Sentences that begin with a number are left alone.

Popular uses

  • Tidying transcripts, captions and dictated notes
  • Fixing messages typed in all lowercase
  • Repairing text typed with Caps Lock on
  • Preparing user comments or reviews for display

Tips for the best result

  • With 'Lowercase the rest' on, proper nouns become lowercase; check names afterwards.
  • Quotes are handled: the first letter inside an opening quote is capitalized.
  • Use Remove Extra Spaces first if your text has double spaces after periods.

Frequently asked questions

Not by default: only the first letter of each sentence changes, so names and acronyms stay as they are. Turn on 'Lowercase the rest' to fix text typed in capitals; the pronoun 'I' is capitalized again.

Periods after common abbreviations, initials and in decimals don't end a sentence, so the next word isn't capitalized by mistake.
