Alphabetize a List: what to know
Alphabetize List puts words, names or titles in alphabetical order, A to Z or Z to A. Paste one item per line, or separate items with commas and choose comma-separated input.
Sorting follows dictionary rules: capital and small letters sort together, accented letters sort with their base letter ('Émile' with the E names), and numbers in items sort by value. Turn on 'Ignore The, A, An' to file titles the way libraries do, so 'The Beatles' goes under B.
Empty items are removed and spaces around items are trimmed, so a messy list comes out tidy.
Popular uses
- Alphabetizing guest lists, class lists and rosters
- Ordering bibliography and reference entries
- Sorting glossaries, indexes and tags
- Putting book, film or song titles in shelf order
Tips for the best result
- For surnames first, write entries as 'Surname, First name' before sorting.
- Use comma-separated mode for lists copied from a sentence or spreadsheet cell.
- Remove duplicates in the same pass when merging lists.
