Speaking Time Calculator: what to know
The speaking time calculator estimates how long your text takes to say out loud, for speeches, presentations, podcasts, video scripts and wedding toasts.
The default pace is 140 words per minute, inside the 120 to 160 range commonly suggested for presentations. Choose slow (120) for formal speeches with pauses, slides or interpretation, fast (160) for conversational video narration, or enter your own speed.
The best estimate is your own: read one paragraph aloud at your natural pace, time it, and divide the number of words by the minutes. Enter that speed and the calculator will be right for you every time.
Popular uses
- Fitting a speech or talk into its time slot
- Writing video and podcast scripts to length
- Timing a eulogy, toast or presentation
- Planning how many words a timed exam answer needs
Tips for the best result
- Pauses, applause and slide changes add time; leave 10 to 20 percent spare.
- A 5-minute speech is roughly 600 to 800 words depending on pace.
- Practice out loud with a timer at least once; nerves usually speed people up.
