Word Counter: what to know
The word counter updates with every keystroke: words, characters with and without spaces, sentences, paragraphs, lines, unique words, average word and sentence length, plus estimated reading and speaking time. Paste a whole document or type straight into the box.
Words are counted the way word processors count them. Contractions such as don't, hyphenated words such as well-known, decimals and numbers with thousands separators each count as one word, while dashes, emoji and punctuation on their own don't count. Text in Chinese and Japanese, which has no spaces, is counted one character per word.
The keyword list shows the words you use most and their density, the share of all words they make up. Common function words (the, and, of) are left out by default so the topic words stand out; switch them back on if you're checking for repetition.

Tips for the best result
- Different tools can differ by a word or two on edge cases such as URLs and number formats; check against the counter your teacher or publisher uses if a limit is strict.
- Reading time uses 238 words per minute and speaking time 140; the Reading and Speaking time pages let you change the pace.
- A keyword density far above the rest often reads as repetition; try a synonym or rephrase.
